The Single Roundabout interchange includes roundabout
or traffic circle operations centered over a depressed
priority roadway.
Turning traffic from the free-flow roadway is combined
within the roundabout with cross street through
and turning movements, as well as any frontage traffic
accessing the parcels at the interchange.
The central Roundabout uses multiple entry points
that can be either merge- or yield-controlled depending
on volumes, number of lanes and/or central roadway
radius.
The grade on the free-flow street must be short
and steep to descend underneath the roundabout and
ascend before the next signalized intersection,
often in close proximity in an urban grid.
In addition to reducing intersection delay and
queuing, the Single Roundabout interchange can handle
more than four intersecting roadways and serve as
a frontage road for adjacent interchange parcels.
